Yearly check up and Adenomyosis

Hi Doc,
I went in to my yearly check up yesterday and my Dr gave me a word to research (Adenomyosis) after I gave him some symptoms I had been having. I am 31, I have a 3 year old little girl, and I have had the following symptoms: Severe pain my 2nd and 3rd day on my period (feels like onset of labor pains), passing small blood clots, pain down my legs during my period (sometimes I think my period has ended and then more blood), extreme moodiness before about a week before my period, and extreme bloatedness right before and during my period, I look like I did at 12 weeks pregnant(although this does go away after my period). I am also always very tired, I feel like I need at least 10 to 12 hours a night. I thought that because I had had a child, it explained the heavy bleeding as in my cervix just never closed back up to it’s origianl pre-pregnancy state. I also thought that my moodiness was just PMS, but it is more severe now than at any other time in my life. My Doc said that we would try other things first to rule out any premenopausel hormone imbalances like a contraceptive pill. I do not experience these same symptoms every period, but they happen every other month or so. I am currently not taking a contaceptive pill, and I really do not want to start taking one. Does this sound like Adenomyosis to you? Are there any other symptoms associated with this disease? How fast can it become more severe? We are thinking about having 1 or 2 more children. My Doc talked about eventually when a women is so severely affected by this, that a hysterectomy is the answer to this. My mom had a complete hysterectomy at 37 and I remember what she had to go through. She was diagnosed with fibroid tumors. Is this disease genetic?

Dear CS-
Your symptoms are classic for adenomyosis…the most common are heavy bleeding with clots, painful cycles, painful intercourse or pelvic exams and an enlarged uterus. The disease will progress with every cycle..as it is hormone dependent. We do often see a genetic link, as with fibroids. Current treatment is commonly hysterectomy. We recommend our laser procedure with a uterine reconstruction.
The longer you wait for treatment the worse your symptoms will become.
