I live in Minnesota, and we do have the Mayo Clinic. Do you know if others are planning to provide this surgery for women who perhaps would find it difficult to travel for the surgery?

I’m giddy that there is an alternative, and am anxious to hear if the surgery will ever be available closer to home.

Dear Baby Face-
Traditional medical philosophy must be cast aside in order to be interested in performing this type of surgery. Hopefully some day it will be available elsewhere. If women continue to demand alternatives, change will occur.

My doctor performed a hysteroscopy on me and we saw that there was a large fibroid tumor in the center of my uterous. He suggested an abdominal hysterectomy.
How would your procedure differ?

Dear Anonymous-
A hysterectomy is a very simple one hour procedure where the entire organ will be completely removed. This may not be without potential complications (see website section). Our FAS procedure uses a laser to surgically excise the tumor(s) and reconstruct your uterus. We do not believe in removing complete organs for benign female diseases. This program is for patients who want to preserve their organs as an alternative to castration. Please refer to the website more details

Dear Doctor:

Are you the only doctor that performs this surgery? Are you saying no other doctor will attempt this type of surgery considering the results? Why?

Dear Toni-
This IS the only place in the country offering this type of surgery. This procedure was created over 12 years ago, but is not taught in medical schools. It requires a specific, highly technical surgical approach with laser skill. Most gyns do not perform the procedure because they dont know the technique. It is much easier to perform a simple hysterectomy, or at best a myomectomy. Its simply not available elsewhere because it has not been taught globally. It also requires the physician to have a different philosophical approach to a woman’s needs-working with a woman to conserve her organs is much different than offering no alternatives but organ removal. That is much easier and less complicated for the phyisican.
