Whether to lose an ovary or not

Dear Dr. del Junco,

I recently had an ultra sound and two different
doctors have looked at the pictures and believe I
have a serous adenofibroma on my right ovary,
about 5 cm diameter. It seems to have engulfed
most of my ovary. It appears to be benign. It also
appears I have a 1 cm unilocular (probably luteal)
cyst on my left ovary. I’m 45 and I’ve got a hard
choice. The right ovary is definitely history.
But, should I have the left ovary removed also to
help insure I won’t need surgery again for
ovarian cysts, OR, should I keep it? I am
premenopausal, so it’s still doing the job. I’m
also quite thin and don’t want to get
osteoporosis. I’m having terrible trouble making
up my mind.

Dear Lisa-
This is strictly a personal decision.
I do not believe in removing organs for benign conditions. This Institute stands behind the philosophy of organ preservation, whenever possible.
Good Luck
Dr. DJ
