Dear Dr. Del Junco Jr.:

First off I’d like to thank you for providing a place with such helpful resources.

I’d recently found a fibroid following a pelvic ultrasound (transabdomial & transvaginal). It’s measured 4.9 cm x 2.9cm x2.1cm in diameter while my uterus measures 7.2cm x4.0cm x 3.9 cm in diameter. It’s unclear where exactly the fibroid is located in the uterus.

I’m 33 and trying to conceive for a first child. Is a myomectomy via a hysteroscopy recommended and if so, what’s your recommendation ?

Thanks for your advice.
Candy

Dear Candy-
A submucosal fibroid cannot be removed with a hysteroscopy. That procedure is only helpful if the tumors are projecting into the endometrial cavity.
Fibroids are a surgical condition…they should be removed, and the sooner the better. However, that said, many women carry a pregnancy to term with fibroids……it is determined on the location and the size of the tumor. IF your doctor thinks he/she can safely remove your fibroid(s), and it is in a location that will no disrupt future fertility, it probably should be removed prior to any conception. The choice is yours.
