I’m a 58 year old, still have uterus and ovaries, on HRT for 6 or 7 years, no period for about 9 years and I have been bleeding (not heavy) for about 3 weeks with lower back and front pain. Do you think it might be fibroids?

Dear Linda-Dont make the assumption that you have fibroids until you get them diagnosed, via an ultrasound. If this test shows that you have fibroids, your HRT, depending upon the estrogen levels, may be stimulating tumor growth subsequently causing your signs and symptoms. Please refer to section of website on fibroid tumors.

Ultrasound confirmed the presence of a fibroid a year or two ago. I have been passing blood clots and menstrustrating quite heavily for about four weeks. My blood count was at 69 two days ago. My doctor put me on Premarin. I also have endometriosis but it doesn’t seem to have been bothering me since December. I am 50 years old. Today I feel weaker than yesterday. Is there any natural substance that a person can take to stop the incessant bleeding besides Premarin. I was warned that if I took hormone treatment that my endometriosis would continue its normal path. After being free of its symptoms for several months and being well into menopause (possibly the last period) I hate to get everything going again Thank you very much for your time.

Dear Hopeful-
I do not recommend this form of treatment for fibroid tumors. Your physician is manipulating your hormones in order to reduce your bleeding which is due solely to the tumors; they need to be surgically removed. Eventually, most women succumb to some type of hormone replacement therapy during menopause-if your tumors are not removed, this estrogen supplmentation will start the tumors growing again and may produce symptoms. I do not recommend hormone treatments or the “wait and see” philosophy-the disease only progresses.
