Ovary Removal

I have been having abdominal pain since Feb this year. Ultrasound in Feb. showed a large simple cyst in association with the left ovary. Just recently the pain increased and a subsequent U/S showed the left ovary enlarged (volume 83ml) and a complex solid and cystic lesion involving the left ovary (max. diameter 5.4 cm). The U/S report suggested the possibility of cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma. I am currently waiting for the results of a CA 125 test.
I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago for fibroids.
My doctor is recommending removal of the left ovary and is suggesting that the right ovary should be taken as a precautionary measure. (I do not want a healthy organ removed). The right ovary appears normal on U/S. I am 40 years old. Do you have any advise? Also, do you know of anyone in Australia who shares your commitment to saving organs? Thanks.

Dear Lizzle-
It is very important that you determine if there is malignancy or not!! When you go in for surgery, your doctor should be able to send the specimen for pathology and determine while you are on the table if the cyst is malignant. If it is, you should probably have both ovaries removed. If not, the left ovary should be reconstructed and the right left alone. I do not advocate removal of organs for benign conditions. We have received many emails from your area, and I am sorry to say there isnt even anyone here in the US currently practicing our surgical philosophy. Good Luck
