Dear Dr,
I have today been to my doctor following a laparoscopy I underwent in December(see previous message from me Jan 22). The results for Endo came back negative, but my doctor is now referring me for an ultrasound as I am still not convinced nothing is wrong. Is their anyway the laparoscopy could have not picked up Fibroids or Adenyomosis, but an ultrasound will? Please help as I do not know what to do next.

Dear Sara-
Ultrasounds are very limited diagnostic tests….they are fine for diagnosing fibroids, if the tumors are not too small, however ultrasounds are not able to determine if adenomyosis is present. Your symptoms are classic for that disease, which is often suspected with an enlarged and painful uterus on exam. The only conclusive way to diagnose adeno is with a tissue biopsy during surgery. You are one of the difficult cases that usually get treated with an eventual hysterectomy…I know our program could help you.
Our techniques allow us to remove the adeno and laser treat the remaining muscle but the surgery is done through an open technique not a limited laparoscopy.
We are the only practice in the country offering this specific type of surgery…..
Get a few opinions….but I do not recommend waiting any longer for treatment, if you do have adenomyosis….the condition will only worsen.
