I recently had an ultrasound indicating I have several fibroids. One is lying against my tailbone causing lower back pain, and the other is pushing up against my bladder. I was told my options are removing only the fibroids through laser, which could maybe cause them to reoccur, or having my uterus and cervix removed. I really don’t know what to do because I dont’t want to have them removed, then later they grow back and anothr surgery wuld be needed. What are some of the negative side affects of having my uterus and cervix removed. I was told that since I was keeping the ovaries,I would not go into early menopause, and it would not affect my sex drive. I am in alot of pain and discomfort, and am uncomfortable having sex at times. Please advise. I do have a good doctor, but I hear so many stories on unnecessary hysterectomies. I do not want anymore children, but I als do not want to have any other complications or bad side effects. Thank You..

Dear Ms. Lewis-
With traditional gynecological techniques fibroid tumor disease has a very high recurrence rate. Our FAS program has an extremely low one partially due to our use of laser.
Hysterectomy has many many negative side effects for up to 75% of women following that surgery. We highly recommend patients do their research before agreeing to that irreversible procedure. We often recommend women seek answers via the
www.hersfoundation.com... this is an independent group that has done long term research on hysterectomy and its outcomes. Some side effects are bowel and bladder prolapse, hormone imbalance and sexual dysfunction.
I know our FAS procedure can help you. We also videotape our procedures, so you know we have successfully removed your tumors.
