I am a 41 y/o with frequent urination and pelvic pressure for about 5 years. An 6/04 US showed 3 fibroid tumors: (1) 6.7 in diameter. (1) 4.1 and (1) 1.7. I just had an MRI last week 4/16/05 and results showed Overall Uterus 8.6 x 7.0 x 10.0. The tumors have grown slightly: (1) 7.2 x 6.4 x 6.1 (1) 4.4 x 3.2 x 4.0 (1) 1.4 x 1.5 x 1.9. It does not seem to be a suprise from all i’ve read about the tumors only growning bigger and never shrinking. However, I have a problem. I only have one ovary. My right ovary was removed in my early 20’s because of large re-curring cysts and my Doctor suggested after the 3rd surgery to remove the ovary because I could not keep going in year after year for surgery. The problem now is that unless I keep taking my Ovcon-35 B/C pills, my left ovary produces great enlargement with every cycle. If I go off the pill and have a cycle, the egg gets released and the ovary is suppose to shrink afterward, it does not….it only gets bigger and they put me back on the pill to shink it or suggest surgery. So, the problem I have is that I need the pill to keep my ovary dormant, but I’m feeding the fibroids with Estrogen. If I was to have the FAS procedure and you were to get all the tumors out, can I still stay on the pill and what are my chances of producing more fibroids by continuting to introduce Estrogen with the B/C pills?

Dear Michele-
Although HRT is not something we recommend for fibroid tumor patients, we do understand that sometimes is maybe required for hormonal balance. You do fall into that category.
I dont foresee any problems following FAS. Our procedure is so thorough that a recurrence of fibroids, especially at your age, would be very minimal.
