Dear Haili-
Your tumor disease is in the early stages…many women do not exhibit symptoms until the tumors grow in size and number. Fibroids are a surgical disease…as long as they remain untreated, and the body has a supply of estrogen, the tumors will grow and spread. Most gyns will advise patients to “wait and watch” the disease…this only allows the tumors more time to develop and create symptoms. We recommend having them removed as soon as they are discovered.
You may also want to get another opinion…as most fibroid tumors, especially smaller ones, do not usually produce pain. Either your fibroids are larger than suspected, or you could have more than one.

I am 31 and was diagnosed about a year ago with fibroid tumors. Today I went to have some X-RAYS done and the technician told me that my intire uturus was covered with the fibroid tumors. I dont want to have a hysterectomy. I have not had any children yet.

I am a 31 year old mother of two and I just recently found out that I have a fybroid. I was told that the fybroid feels as if I were 16 weeks pregnant (honey dew size). I am scheduled to have an ultrasound in a couple of days. If it turns out that this fybroid is that big, I know that I have to have it removed. Does this mean that I would definetly have to have a hysterectomy? Also, I want to have one more child, could this mean that I would not be able to have another child?

Dear Danielle-
First, dont panic!! Wait to discuss the results with your doctor. Although many technicians are extremely good at what they do, they should not be discussing results of any diagnostic test with a patient.
Be prepared to ask for options, and do some research. Many women can get pregnant and carry a child with fibroids. Your fertility will be dependent on the number, size and location of the tumors. Even if pregnancy options are minimal, at your age you do not want to lose your uterus…there are far too many possible complications after that procedure.
FAS can help you, if you are interested call my office.

Dear Michelle-
A fibroid that large will be difficult to remove using traditional surgical techniques. Make sure you do NOT consent for a hysterectomy or you will probably wake up without your uterus.
Chances of fertility are dependent on three factors: size, number and location of tumors. There is no way to conclusively determine fertility options until the time of surgery.
Our FAS program can definitely remove the tumor(s) and save your uterus, which we feel is important for hormone regulation and sexual response even when fertility is not an option.
