I am young and I need to know some things. Will I want to have sex afterwards?I have heard that it depends on the woman.I heard some woman have no sexual desire and some just cant get enough. I am going to have just my uterus removed, so I wont have to take hormones will I? This is going to be hard for me I think because I am so young.

Dear Crystal-
You did not mention your age or why you have elected to have a hysterectomy. Seventy five (75%) of hysterectomies are unnecessary and 75% of women have irreversible side effects from the surgery, one of them being lack of sexual desire and lack of sexual sensation. We do not routinely recommend that procedure.
Even when the ovaries are saved…they do not work as well once the uterus has been removed. Women usually end up on hormone replacement therapy sooner than if they had gone into menopause naturally.
There are many complications associated with a hysterectomy. Some are as follows:
lack of sexual desire and sensation
depression
uncontrollable hormone imbalance
bowel prolapse leading to constipation
bladder prolapse leading to incontinence
Please do your research carefully before electing to have this surgery.

I’m 25 years old and need a hysterectomy. I have been have pain for 5 years when I have sex. The doctor did one surgery to see if he could take care of the problem and that didn’t work. So the next option was to have a hysterectomy. He also said that I had a cervix prolasp. But my question is am I going to still get pain like I’m still having a period? Also they will do the surgery even if it’s that time of month?

Dear Sarah-
We do not recommend hysterectomy for patients your age with noncancerous conditions. Hysterectomy is an irrevisble procedure…and there are many complications that can arise from that surgery. 75% of women experience some type of negative side effect that does not resolve….please so your research carefully before agreeing to that surgery.
You should get a diagnosis and look for methods of treatment…you may adenomyosis, which can be effectively removed with laser surgery, preserving your uterus.
Give my office a call, I know we can help you.

Dear Cheryl-
Thank you for this important post.
We treat women on an individual basis in our program. Some women need HRT to have a positive quality of life, and that is important.
As a general surgeon, I regularly treat breast cancer in my office…women should be aware that HRT over long term can increase the potential for that disease. As long as women know the risks and benefits…they can make an informed decision for themselves.
Lower doses and for shorter times is obviously advisable.
