Dear Maggie-
If you do not want to take birth control pills, you only have two other options: do nothing, if you are having no major symptoms, or have an outpatient laparoscopic surgery and have the cyst removed.
Good Luck

Have had ultra sound done, the docter tells me there is a mass on my left ovarie, about six cm. I have been told I should have both removed, I am 49yrs olds. The Docters think it might be a cyst,I was wondering if there is any thing that could be done besides operating or what is the best way. CONFUSED!

Dear Susan-
With a cyst/mass that large, I would recommend surgery for removal of the mass. If the mass is benign, I would not recommend removal of your ovaries.
I believe the female body should progress naturally into menopause, based on your biological clock, whenever possible. If you remove both ovaries surgically, you will immediately be thrown into menopause and will require hormone replacement therapy. This can be very difficult on many women.
We recommend laser removal of the cyst/mass to reduce damage to the organ. I would suggest another opinion.
