For the last two months, just after my period has ended, I have gotten severe cramping, my lower back and vagina ache and then I have gotten a high fever (102+) that has lasted for 3-4 days. At first I thought I had the flu, but then I got the cramping and fever for a second month in a row.

My other symptoms; heavy periods that have increased over the last year. They only last 2-3 days, but I used to have really light periods. Now I have to change ultra plus tampons every hour to hour and a half, even during the night. I am always tired, but I have three children with two under 4 years and I work (are the fibroids the cause?) I have trouble with sleep…insomnia at least 1-2 nights per week. I am slightly anemic. I have felt the need to urinate more frequently, but thought it was due to having more children. I never used to have much PMS, but now it causes weeks where I am on a roller coaster.

My husband got me in to the doctor while experiencing the second round of fever and he gave me 2 kinds of antibiotics. Later I went in for an ultrasound. I was told I have two fibroids. One in the lining (2cm) and 1 in the muscle (4 cm). Since “I no longer need my uterus”, he wanted me to have an hysterectomy.

I am 39 and have had 3 children. My husband has had a vacectomy, but I definately am stilling using my uterus. I have never in my life envisioned me as one of those women who would have one. It appalls me how readily men or the mainstream medical profession will treat the symptoms and just have this organ removed. I find it creepy. And I find that they never answer how it affects you long term to not have a uterus.

Searching for alternatives was depressing until I saw your site. I have to get over the idea of travelling to have the surgery, but I will get there.

Could you offer your feedback regarding this, especially regarding the cramping after the period has ended and the 3-4 days of fever?

Dear Isabel-
Yours is not a typical profile…there is noway to know what is producing the fevers.
You may also have adenomyosis in addition to your fibroids, which is uterine endometriosis. Adeno produces very heavy bleeding with cramps, pain and an enlarged uterus…which might explain some of your symptoms.
Either way..you should have the tumors removed and the uterus inspected for adenomyosis.
Good luck
