I am a 35 year old mother of four. When I gave birth to my third son last year, there was a suspicion of a fibroid and was due for checkup at my six week check. I discovered that I was newly pregnant three months following his birth. Long story short, they discovered a large fibroid at top of fundus. Concern at the time son number four was born was hemorhage, especially since it had been less than a year between births. My son is now two months old and my uterus still measures top of my naval and shows no evidence of shrinking to “normal” size. The fibroid is also continuing to grow. I have no intention of having anymore children and I am ok with the doctors advice to have the hysterectomy. Should I be concerned, my mother is, but I am not.

Dear Nicole-
We never recommend women have a hysterectomy for fibroid tumors, especially someone as young as you. Hysterectomy has many many negative side effects that effect 75% of recipients. The most common are sexual dysfunction (lack of sensation and desire), hormone imbalance with depression and mood swings, early menopause with osteoporosis and heart disease and finally bladder and bowel prolapse.
The HERS Foundation has an excellent site for information. Please do your research carefully before considering that surgery.
