Ectopic Ovarian Cyst

I’ve been plagued w/cysts and minor endometriosis for years. (Never been pregnant.) Have had numerous laprascopic procedures. 2 1/2 years ago at age 37, I had a complete hysterectomy. Have been on hormones ever since.

Now have pain in lower left ovary area and painful intercourse. CAT showed small cyst on left ovary. I don’t have ovaries.

Doctor has scheduled me for pelviscopy and the report says possible ectopic ovarian cyst or endometriosis. What is an ectopic ovarian cyst and how can I have this if I don’t have an ovary?

Dear Teri-
We have seen this type of scenario before.
Your mass could be an endometrioma..which is a collection of endometrial cells that have developed in the area where your ovary was. These cells were deposited in your pelvis prior to your hysterectomy and are responding to your hormone replacement therapy. We would recommend surgical removal of the mass.
