I’m interested to know why degenerating fibroids should be removed in women who are menopausal? You mentioned some connection with cancer and degenerating fibroids in a post?

My fibroids are app. 9 x 9, 6 x 7, and 5 x 5 (as of 10 months ago), and I’m 50, but am not yet menopausal.

Thanks.

Dear Shelley-
Research has shown an incidence of degenerating fibroids becoming malignant sarcomas.
As the tumor out grows the blood supply, and begins to degenerate…many patient also experience increased, and severe abdominal pain.
Another reason why we recommend removing the tumors…do not wait.

If you are still out there, please let me know, what is the treatment for post menopausal fibroids and if we remove them or cut off their supply of oxygen, what is the chance of regrowth?

Dear Clakes-
We usually recommend that fibroid tumors be surgically removed.
Once a woman is in menopause, and the estrogen supply has diminished, tumor growth begins to slow down and can even stop. However, if the woman begins ANY type of hormone replacement therapy, natural or synthetic, the tumor will begin to grow again.
Depending on the age of the patient, the size and location of the tumor and the symptoms reported, we usually recommend surgically removing the tumor. Our oldest patient has been 60 years old.
Good Luck
