I am about to have surgery for severe endometriosis which is on my left side. i am 29 and would like to start conceiving in about a year. I have 2 very good surgeons and they have both asked me to consider hormone therapy post operatively, or to take the pill continuously. Whilst waiting for my operation i have considered this in depth and have decided against drug therapy and am considering alternative therapies such as naturopathy and or chinese herbal medicine. I am an allied health professional and have been trained to think within the medical model so i am slightly skeptical. Could you offer your comments on the effectiveness of alternative therapies for reducing the recurrance of endometriosis? i will ask my surgeons this after the op, but would appreciate any advice you can offer now.

Dear Eva-
This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on effectiveness and modality of the treatment….we believe that herbal therapies post surgery can be of assistance in minimizing recurrence of endometriois based on our statistics. Our program uses 2 different lasers to remove the endo…which we have found to be much more effective than traditional methods. Also, surgical outcomes are dependent on thoroughness of the procedure. It is imperative in treating endometriosis that ALL surfaces of the abdomen and pelvis be examined..inclusive of bowel and bladder. If areas are left undetected the effectiveness of the post surgical therapy will be minimal.
Good luck
