Dear Dr. del Junco:

I am 41 years old with no children. I had surgery about 5 years ago to remove fibroid tumors. Just recently I was diagnosed with a tumor as large as a grapefruit. The only options I was given by my Doctor was to either have a hysterectomy or take hormone shots to relieve the heavy bleeding and cramps. I don’t want to do either. I am trying to find another alternative to shrink the tumors or get rid of them altogether. I would like to have at least one child someday.

Can you please give my some advice that’s safe and effective? My symptoms are heavy bleeding, small to large blood clots, and irritability.

Thank you

Wanda

Dear Wanda-
Unfortuntately, you may need to have surgery in order to become pregnant. Hormone shots will only treat the symptoms and not the fibroid tumors. Once the shots are stopped, the symptoms will return and the fibroid will continue to grow.
Hysterectomy is also NOT an positive option. We do not believe in removing organs for benign disease. The uterus plays too many other roles in the female body to be removed so casually. Please read the section on the website on hysterectomy complications.
FAS would remove your tumors and symptoms and allow you the option of future fertility.
