Age 43, grapefruit sized cyst, should I have my ovary out?

Dear Doctor,

For the second time, I have a grapefruit-sized simple cyst on my left ovary. I’m in a lot of pain. GYN (only met her 2 weeks ago) plans to take my ovary and tube. Last surgery my previous GYN (i moved away) just removed the cyst to maintain fertility. I’ve had tubal ligation, want no more children. Is there still a reason to keep my left ovary and tube? My right ovary is normal.

Please let me know what you think. Surgery is May 5. I’m in so much pain but still don’t know if I can go through with it unless I’m sure that I’m doing the right thing.

Dear April Sue-
We dont believe in removing organs for noncancerous diseases. You should have the cyst removed in total, inclusive of the outer capsule.
You mentioned that your doctor already removed a cyst from this location once before..there is a possibility that he/she did not get the entire cyst and left remnants of the lining or capsule….this can allow the cyst to return.
Make sure the entire cyst is removed and you will have less of a chance of a recurrence.
I would recommend that you keep your tube and ovary to ensure normal hormonal balance.
Good luck
