I began complaining to my primary 3 years ago of cyclic LLQ pain. I present with painful cramping and heavy, clotted bleeding, bloating, vasillation between constipation and diarreah, lower back pain, extreme pelvic pressure, frequent urination and pain during sex. It was dismissed as IBS. I insisted on a referral to an OB/GYN who said it was either IBS or maybe I should just have a left salpingo-oophorectomy. I went to another OB who said it was probably endo or adhesion disease and wanted to put me on hormone therapy to see what happens. By now I’ve also had an ultrasound and CAT. I went to another OB who honored my request to actually determine the problem with laparoscopy. The endo and adhesions were minimal but she determined and photographed 2 fibroid tumors, one that was intramural and one subserosal measuring 3-4 cm and significantly placed adjacent to my sigmoid colon. She recommended a hysterectomy. I researced UFE and have had consults with USC and Cedars-Sinai. I have most recently had an MRI which states I have adenomyosis, predominatly involving the fundus. I don’t have consistent diagnois as the surgical doctor says it’s fibroids and the MRI says it’s adenomyosis. I had an ovarian cyst rupture at age 21 and I had a tubal ligation with cauterization at age 24. I am 45 now but I don’t want a hysterectomy and that is what’s being recommended again.

Dear Helene-
Adenomyosis can be very difficult to diagnose with standard testing…solid tumor types like adenomyomas can look very much like fibroids, however your symptoms are more classic for adenomyosis. You may have both conditions.
Our FAS procedure can laser remove the adeno and the fibroids and reconstruct your uterus. We have had great success with both conditions for many patients. We do not recommend hysterectomy as the first line of approach for either condition. I know we can help you….give my office a call
