Adenomyosis and Fibroids

I am 26 years old and I have been having a lot of problems with my period for almost two years. I will bleed every day for months at a time, with very little time inbetween. The past year it has been very heavy with large clots and cramping. I went to several doctors who did nothing to help me. They just changed my birth control pills and never even ordered any tests except a pap. Finally the pain got so bad that my new doctor ordered an ultrasound and said that I had a very enlarged uterus and needed surgery to remove a fibroid tumor. He removed a couple of fibroids that were on the endometrial surface and informed me that I had a chronic infection, adenomyosis, and possibly fibroid tumors embedded in the uterine muscle. He prescribed an antibiotic and progesterone, but it has been three weeks since my surgery and I am still bleeding very heavily every day. I don’t think the surgery did much to solve my problem and I am getting desperate. I am also very worried that I may not be able to have children because of the adenomyosis. I am very confused. Help!

Dear Tami-
Your concerns are very valid!!! Your severe bleeding may not have been caused by the superficial tumors that were removed. In my experience, women suffer with symptoms due to the tumors imbedded in the uterine muscle under the endometrial lining. This is why FAS attempts to remove ALL the fibroids-even those deep in the organ. Adenomyosis needs to be treated right away. We use a laser technique that destroys the disease while attempting to salvage normal uterine tissue. Often times a “debulking” procedure is necessary to remove much of the damaged tissue, to reduce untoward symptoms and this makes fertility very difficult, if not impossible. Do not take the “wait and see”approach.
Let us know if we can help you. Good Luck

I AM A 40 YEARS OLD AND WAS TOLD THREE WEEKS AGO AFTER TAKING A SONOGRAM THAT I HAVE 5 FIBRIOD TUMORS. THE LARGEST THE SIZE OF A LEMON. TWO
ARE IN THE UTERUS WALL. I WAS TOLD THAT TWO COULD BE EASLIY REMOVED BUT THE TWO IN THE WALL MAY REQUIRE A HYSTERECTOMPY. I HAVE NO CHILDREND BUT I DO NOT WANT MY OPTIONS TAKEN AWAY FROM ME. I AM NOT EXPERICING ANY PROBLEMS AS FAR AS BLEEDING OR PAIN. I DO GO TO THE BATHROOM A LOT. WHAT ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES TO SURGERY. OR SHOULD I WAIT AND SEE.

Dear Kaye40-
We do not recommend the “wait and see” philosophy as the disease only progresses and becomes more difficult to treat. Surgery is the best treatment for fibroids, however there is no need for a hysterectomy. FAS can remove fibroids under the uterine lining or deep in the organ safely and effectively; and allow you to keep your options open. We advocate organ preservation not organ removal, in benign conditions. Please give us a call if we can help you.

I am 46 years old and was told that I have fibroids that make me look 4 mths pregnant. My Doctor told me that I will need to have day surgery to have the fibroids & uterus removed, my ovaries because I’m over 45 yrs old. I would like to know if it’s possible for me to only have the fibriods removed or is there some type of shot that I can get to dissolve them at the size they are now. My blood work and other test shows that I have no other problems.

Dear May-
Once again, you are the recipient of the old traditional form of gynecology that advocates organ removal for female problems. There is absolutely no reason to remove your uterus for your fibroid tumors.
I have operated on several women with tumors the size of a 7-8 month pregnancy-never did I remove their uterus. This organ is extremely important in the female hormone regulatory system, and in natural sexual functioning-once it is removed there can be a significant disruption to the female body. Please read the section on the website about hysterectomy complications-those symptoms are a reality for many women, and at that point there is no treatment.
Please make your decision very carefully.
