A second surgery

Hello Dr.

A girlfriend of mine came to you for removal of her fibroids a couple years ago and just raves about you. I plan to get the same surgery next year. I’ve already had a myomectomy in 1998 but my Dr. could not remove all the fibroids due to potential blood-loss. Since that surgery, (which at that time my uterus was the size of a 3-month pregnancy) my existing fibroids have grown and I’ve acquired new ones. My uterus is presently at the size of a 4-month pregnancy.

Do you think having surgery at your clinic will buy me some time to have children? I turned 35 in May and would like to have children before it’s too late but the earliest I could have surgery would be in 2003. If indeed I need to wait at least a year to conceive, will I be alright trying to have my first child at 36 or 37?

Dear Jqhill-
Thank you for your email.
If you already have a 4 month size uterus..you should not wait any longer to have surgery. We have had women get pregnant post FAS, but this is totally dependent on the size and location of the tumors at surgery. The larger your fibroids get…the more difficult to possibly get pregnant after surgery.Ultrasound reports can help us when discussing pregnancy options.
Many patients are getting pregnant in their late 30s these days…some as late as early 40s….although this is not the best scenario.
Chances of you getting pregnant now with a 4 month size uterus are pretty slim…I would recommend having the surgery asap to remove the tumors.
