Dr. del Junco Jr. and the staff at the Institute for Female Alternative Medicine have made it possible for a patient and her companions to see her own bloodless, state of the art laser surgery to remove fibroids, endometriosis and other diseases of the uterus. This important, optional service allows a woman to be awake and alert during a procedure designed as an alternative to hysterectomy to preserve the woman's reproductive organs.

What makes our practice different from all the others?
We have two very special features that make our program more desirable to patients and their families.

Stay awake during your surgery
As seen in an article in The Los Angeles Times from Monday June 2, 2003, the newest trend in surgery is to remain awake during your surgical procedure. FAS for fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and ovarian cysts is pleased to offer this option.

Although this practice is still not widely available for many procedures, given the nature of our alternative to hysterectomy for fibroids and other diseases of the uterus, our FAS program started offering this option over eight years ago. 98% of our patients receive epidural anesthesia along with some intravenous sedation. This allows for the patient to remain awake during the procedure yet receive complete pain relief and as well as freedom from post-operative general anesthesia side effects such as nausea or vomiting. Patients are also up and out of bed much more quickly which leads to faster recoveries. (General anesthesia is still available for those patients who do not meet epidural guidelines or prefer to be placed under a general anasthesia)

See your surgery on live video
Whether for fibroids, endometriosis or the other disesases of the uterus covered by FAS, the entire FAS procedure can be viewed live in the patient’s private room via closed circuit television . The patient’s family and companions are welcome to observe the surgery as it takes place.

The procedure is also videotaped for the patient to view the day after surgery, should she elect to not watch the procedure live.

We strongly believe that this direct visualization helps patients and their family members fully comprehend the nature and scope of the treatment. Post- surgical recovery is enhanced by the knowledge that the disease has been effectively treated.
