Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that originate on the walls of the uterus. They are the most commonly occurring type of benign tumors in women and are more prevalent in middle aged women who are in their final reproductive years. Fibroids are hard to detect in their initial stages and may not display any prominent symptoms. However, in their advanced stages they do display symptoms like painful intercourse, heavy menstruation, and frequent and urgent urination. Fibroids should not be left untreated as they can cause many problematic symptoms and infertility, over time.

It then becomes essential to treat fibroids as soon as they are detected. For years, the most common method of fibroid removal was hysterectomy, an invasive surgical procedure. There are other surgical methods available these days however most do not adequately remove the tumors. The traditional myomectomy removes fibroids but often leaves the deeper, larger tumors behind, necessitating future surgery. Uterine artery embolization attempts to reduce or cut off the blood supply to the tumors but this too does not ensure the tumors will not grow back. Some women prefer hormonal manipulation over surgery, however, but that is only a temporary short term solution to the side effects, not the actual fibroid disease.

Female Alternative Surgery is the alternative surgical solution to fibroids. The tumors are removed without hysterectomy or blood transfusion, no matter how many, how large or their location. This is a much more holistic approach and allows women to remain hormonally and sexually healthy.

The clinic, The Institute for Female Alternative Medicine, was established by Dr. Tirso del Junco Jr. in order to make this alternative surgery more accessible to women suffering from fibroids. The practice’s uniqueness stems from three important factors : never having to perform a hysterectomy, all surgeries have been bloodless, and most are performed while patient are awake, under epidural anesthesia. This type of medical care is not offered any where in this country. Moreover, your surgery is video taped so viewing is available while in surgery and during your hospitalization post op. The surgery is completely safe and is done with the assistance of lasers. Recurrence rates are very low at 1-3 % compared to traditional surgeries where recurrence can be as high as 64%.

Apart from fibroids, alternativesurgery.com also offers all the information women need to make a well informed choice about how they can deal with other female benign diseases like ovarian cysts, adenomyosis and endometriosis. You can visit the website and find out how well suited Female Alternative Surgery is for you by filling in a short array of questions. Their Education Center is available for reference online. You can also access other important information filled resources on their website such as videos, virtual clinic tours and frequently asked questions. They can be reached directly at 800-505-4326.

Visit their website alternative surgery.com today and see for yourself how Female Alternative Surgery makes getting rid of uterine fibroids the permanent solution to fibroid tumor disease.

My story begins as far back as my late twenties. I had always had symptoms associated with fibroids… you name it, I had it. However, at every OB/GYN appointment when I discussed what was happening the answer was always…” Ok, We’ll wait and see”. If I had the forethought to ask ,”wait and see for what to happen….?”

Fast forward to 2008. I am 38 at this time…and now the symptoms are getting worse. I end up in a Denver emergency room due to a leaking cyst. It was during this visit that the “hysterectomy” word was first dropped. My belly had grown to look like a 34 week pregnancy. Symptoms are getting worse. After the emergency room incident…I began a two year research into female reproductive diseases. I researched every possible surgery (myomectomy, robotic) procedure (MRgFUS, Uterine fibroid embolization) and drugs (Lupron, RU486, Tamoxifen, Asoprisnil) associated with fibroid disease. None of these appealed to me for various reasons such as blood transfusions, side affects or how about lets take the fibroids out and leave everything else. It wasn’t until I saw the website for Female Alternative Surgery that I had my “Agh ha” moment.

This website changed everything. I knew the moment I read the first few paragraphs, I was done searching. A doctor that treated ALL reproductive diseases and try to leave organs intact. This was the team I wanted to do the surgery and the facility I wanted to do it at. So, I contacted them in the fall of 2010. They were honest and upfront about everything. After many phone calls and emails…the surgery was scheduled for April, 2011. I finally met Dr. Del Junco Jr.. I spent a few hours with them which only confirmed that I made the right decision. Dr. Del Junco Jr, and everybody at Temple…thank you for your dedication to patient care and healing. I am extremely grateful to have found you!!!!
Best Regards

I have spent the last 15 years working with women treating multiple benign female diseases by offering an alternative to hysterectomy. It has always been my philosophy that women’s health and their aging process be left to mother nature, allowing them to enter into that next phase of life as naturally as possible. Treating women of all ages, I have found that sometimes the disease process would effect their natural health either by the disease directly or indirectly causing hormonal imbalances, which can lead to premature menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis and sexual disturbances. Watching these women recovery from surgery, with increased energy levels, excited to get their life back, wanting to exercise again, it became very apparent to me that I needed to look deeper into the nutritional areas of their life. As a result, I have spent almost one year researching their nutritional and supplemental needs. I have found that a well balanced diet alone is not enough. Associated diseases like hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders and some gastrointestinal diseases effect the production of amino acids, vitamins, and how the body uses them. Drugs used to treat certain diseases can effect the production of some very important enzymes. For example, high cholesterol pills (statins) inhibits the production of CoQ10.

Women of different ages and activity levels have different nutritional needs. As they reach the next phase of life, Women not only do their bodies physically change, but the hormonal shifts cause physiological symptoms that can also effect their lifestyle, relationships with spouses, families and or significant others. In keeping with my philosophy of minimal to no hormonal replacement therapy to treat these symptoms, it has become equally important to research and develop products that will help alleviate some of these life altering symptoms without the increased risk of developing the female cancers (breast cancer, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers) or causing a recurrence of the benign diseases that we may have just treated ( fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis).

So here we introduce the Institute’s first line of products and supplements specifically designed for women. The foundation of our products starts first with a high potency multi-vitamin/mineral compound. The quality, amount and ratios of the nutrients are based on a long history of clinical data and the newest research available. The 1-1 calcium to magnesium ratio, high potencies of vitamin E, C, D3 and B complexes, the bioactive forms of folate and vitamin B12 and a full compliment of trace elements distinguishes this formula from average Store brand multi vitamins. Our choice of calcium, distinguishes our product from the ordinary brands. There are many supplemental forms of calcium, some cheap, some costly. We use calcium citrate-malate, which is highly absorbable, while simultaneously being safe and well tolerated. About 40% more calcium is absorbed from calcium citrate-malate compared to calcium carbonate. We use this form of calcium in both our multivitamin and osteo support tablets.

We broke down our formulas into different support packs based primarily on activity levels. We also took into account their age and physiological needs. During my research, I found two important products, CoQ10 and L-Carnitine. Very important research as been done on both. CoQ10 has shown extreme benefits as it pertains to cardiac health, in particularly in the treatment of patients with congestive heart failure. It has also shown beneficial effects in slowing down the disease process in patients with Parkinsons.

L-Carnitine a very powerful endurance enhancer. It is a natural occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. About 98% of our L-Carnitine supply resides in the bodies smooth muscle tissue like the heart. Triglycerides are the major source for the production of energy in the heart and skeletal muscle. L-Carnitine allows the body to burn more fat, save more glycogen and ultimately boost stamina and increase endurance. In the vitamin business, I could not find one supplemental pack that addressed women’s needs that would include both of these products together. They were usually sold separately. It was my goal to develop a line of products to address these specific needs and to include both products in one pack.

ACTIVE WOMENS FORMULA

This was put together for women of any age understanding that these women have a full day of activities working, caring for children and home activities, traveling and exercising. This level of activity requires endurance and energy. This multi pack starts with a carefully designed multi vitamin. The cardiac support is addressed with CoQ10 and the ultra potent fish oil (Omega 3 Fatty Acid). To boost your energy level, increase endurance during the day, we have added L-Carnitine. Fitness and nutritional experts recommend L-Carnitine to anyone whose goal is to lose fat, build muscle or just want to improve their overall fitness level.

WOMEN OVER 50 FORMULA

This formula was put together thinking of women 50, 60, 70 and even into their 80’s who are concerned with their overall health. In this group of women, their cardiac, joint and stiffness needs and osteoporosis concerns will be addressed. Again, we start with a carefully designed multivitamin, we add the powerful CoQ10 for cardiac concerns, the ever popular, sometimes called the “Miracle Pill“, ultra potent fish oil (Omega 3 Fatty Acid) which helps in reducing joint stiffness and tenderness, and lowers blood triglyceride levels. Finally, to address the concerns of osteoporosis, we add our osteo support tablet. We use calcium and Vitamin D to support bone mineral density, and magnesium to improve bone strength and remodeling.

It is also important to note that if you are taking high cholesterol medication (statins) you should supplement your diet with CoQ10. These drugs inhibit the production of CoQ10 by the liver.

MENOPAUSAL SUPPORT FORMULA

As women move into the next physiological phase of life, many changes occur as a result of hormone fluxes. Significant research has shown the ill effects of hormone replacement, predominantly in the form of estrogen. In my 22 years of surgical practice, I have treated many cancers associated with women (breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian). It has been established that long term (10 years) use of hormonal replacement increases the incidence of these disorders. It is also well documented, HRT (Hormone replacement therapy), increases the development of fibroid tumor disease, and increases the symptoms associated with endometriosis and adenomyosis. Henceforth, I have been against the use of HRT. I am very well aware that when women reach the menopausal years, symptoms can be difficult to tolerate. They effect lifestyle, relationships and need to be addressed. In formulating this product (Women’s Support capsule), we have used a combination of products that together achieve the balance we are looking for and yet minimize the estrogen effect as much as possible. Black Cohosh, Gamma Oryzanol and Sage have long been shown to suppress or eliminate the number of hot flashes and also improve mood swings and sleep patterns. Although black cohosh is not an herbal estrogen or substitute for estrogen it has similar effects to the female hormone. Hesperdine methylchalcone supports and protects the integrity of the vascular system. We also add our osteo support tablet to address the osteoporosis concerns often seen in this age group of women. Finally, our multi vitamin is added for general support. The goal again is to address those overbearing symptoms of night sweats, hot flashes, as gently and softly as possible. If in 30 days the number of hot flashes has not been satisfactorily addressed, we recommend adding an additional Women’s Support capsule to this pack.

WOMENS SUPPORT FORMULA

This is a stand alone product to address the troubling menopausal symptoms. Designed to be taken alone or to supplement the Menopausal Support Formula.

FUTURE PRODUCTS

In keeping with women’s health and nutrition, I am exploring and researching a formula to help address the most difficult disorder ….. Endometriosis. There has been ongoing research for many years on the potential effects of vitamin/herbal supplementation. My goal is to develop a formula that will aid in minimizing the troublesome symptoms of this disease. Fibroid tumor disease is another of the very problematic benign disorders that plaque women of all ages. It is the most common disease that leads to the highest unnecessary rate of hysterectomy. It is my goal to find a formula that will reduce the growth of fibroids, in turn reducing symptoms, in the early stages of the diagnosis. This may also be helpful in reducing the recurrence of tumors after myomectomy surgery.

Probiotics is another area of interest. Probiotics are beneficial living microorganisms that support healthy gastrointestinal and the immune system. They have also been shown to maintain or restore the genito-urinary micro flora producing a healthy acidic vaginal ph and support against colonization of yeast and bacteria.

It has always been our goal here at the Institute to offer women alternative therapies for a healthy lifestyle……we continue to strive for that goal. We hope these formulas will be a positive addition to your daily routines.

Age: 50 years old
Resides: Alaska

I am fifty years old, divorced and the mother of two grown children. I have no known prospects of remarriage and no desire to have more children. When I began to have problems that I did not want to ignore, I began to seek the source. I eliminated the possibilities of liver, gall bladder and colon as the sources of the discomfort through a nutritional approach, ultrasound and blood tests. Eventually the problem seemed to be coming from the reproductive organs. Again I sought to understand what was wrong.

A physician’s examination and ultrasound narrowed it down to an ovarian problem, which was probably a cyst. I still wanted to understand more about it. What was the cause? How could it be treated? What would happen if it was left alone?

None of the doctors were in any big hurry to settle the issue. I didn’t understand the nonchalance I felt from them until I discovered that there was a hidden agenda which was that women my age are simply expected to have hysterectomies if they have problems. In my case a hysterectomy was recommended as well as an oophmectomy. I didn’t have cancer but they wanted to take the entire organ out. I just couldn’t reconcile myself to that idea.

I continued to seek out the matter and finally hit bedrock. I found a doctor that would surgically repair what was wrong with the organs and not amputate them. It is very simply called female reconstructive surgery and, for a fixed price, every pathology present in your female reproductive organs is taken care of. In the end, you keep these vital organs which can then continue to contribute to the overall health of the body.

The doctor’s name is Tirso del Junco Jr. His father is a surgeon and his son has been around surgical procedures since he was nine years old. He has an established practice as a General Vascular Surgeon but ten years ago, by administrative request, he learned the approach of reconstructing female organs and now stands alone as a qualified surgeon putting his skills as a vascular surgeon to good use in what was once a very bloody operation. He removes most of the blood from the organs and then works quickly to deal with any pathologies he finds (fibroid tumors, cysts, endometriosis, hernias, resuspension of organs), cleansing the organs and sewing the wound up carefully and quickly to allow for as little trauma as possible.

Female medicine is a very new field and they are just beginning to tap into what these organs contribute to our overall health. Though I may never need my uterus again for enhanced relations with a husband or for childbearing, all of the possible contributions this tough little organ is making to my overall health have not been determined yet and I am glad the possibilities have not been eliminated. Dr. del Junco Jr. said, “In Med school we were taught that the only time you remove an organ is when it is cancerous. 650,000 hysterectomies a year in this country alone suggest that a large percentage of surgeons are not adhering to that standard.” The potential for a young lady or married woman to be given a hysterectomy when they have a benign condition that could be taken care of in another way is still very high. I encountered this diagnosis four times before I found someone who would repair, rather than destroy. That’s why I’m writing this. Consider the alternative.

D.H.

Age: 32 years old
Resides: California

In April of 1996, I went to my Gynecologist for my annual exam. She found I had several fibroid tumors whose size she described upon final diagnosis as being “within normal limits.” At that time she suggested instead of removing the fibroids that we just monitor their progress.

In June of 1997, I had relocated to Huntington Beach. I made an appointment with another gynecologist. On my first visit with the new gynecologist it wasn’t more than a minute into the pelvic exam when the doctor exclaimed “you have three very large fibroid tumors and they need to be removed immediately!” I was absolutely devastated. Not more than a year prior to this I had been given practically a clean bill of health and suddenly now I was looking at immediate surgery?

For the last three years I had suffered with severe menstrual cramps, heavy periods, headaches, and extreme fatigue. Despite the several missed days of work, I still went to work in pain. The only relief my gynecologist ever offered me for my symptoms were birth control pills. I never knew there was a better alternative to alleviate my suffering. An alternative that should have been suggested to me long before.

I couldn’t believe the great discrepancy in the two doctor’s opinions. So I went back to my first gynecologist for another appointment. She examined me and still maintained her original diagnosis from my last visit. “She wasn’t excited” by what she saw in the Ultrasound results. Meaning basically the tumors had grown since the last time she examined me, but the growth was negligible. She did however say since the tumors were making me “cuckoo” she recommended that I allow her to do a myomectomy. She was quick to point out that not all the tumors could be removed due to the severe amount of blood loss and she would only remove the ones that were causing a problem. At this point I really didn’t want to consider this option.

Needless to say I was both confused and afraid. I would have been in a real quandary about what to do if not for a friend who had been through a similar ordeal. She recommended that I see Dr. del Junco Jr. After my first visit with Dr. del Junco Jr., I was absolutely certain that his procedure was the best course of action for my problem. He explained all the details and dangers of the procedure in a caring and concise manner. Dr. del Junco Jr. advocated the removal of all the fibroid tumors pointing out that anything left behind would just be a future problem in the waiting. He also reassured me that the blood loss was miniscule compared to other myomectomies.

Deciding to have the procedure required a great deal of deliberation on my part and Dr. del Junco Jr. was kind enough to spend several hours not only in his office but on the telephone as well. I’ve never known such an outpouring of concern and accessibility from a physician.

On August the 11th, 1997, I has the FAS procedure. Dr. del Junco Jr.’s office staff and the hospital staff were wonderful. I was extremely nervous and they went out of their way to make my recovery as comfortable and as expedient as possible. I had around the clock attention.

It has been approximately 20 weeks since I had the surgery. I made a speedy recovery. I had 65 fibroid tumors! All of which were benign. So far I hold the record. I was given a positive prognosis and my prospects of having children look very good. Painful menstrual periods are just a distant memory. I feel more energetic and healthier than I’ve felt in years. I feel like I have a new body.

I didn’t just have an operation. I had an educational experience. Not only did I learn a great deal from my own research but from the videotaped surgeries of Dr. del Junco Jr.’s other patients as well as my own. I was given reading materials on the FAS procedure as well as a list of names of former patients to contact and discuss their experience with the procedure. I felt as if I had been given a rare opportunity to empower myself in making an informed decision about my health. This experience has changed my life and how I will handle future medical problems.

I’m so proud to be among those enlightened women who are paving the way for other women by taking a chance on this pioneering approach to women’s health care. It was one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make in my life but it was worth every agonizing moment.

Thank you Dr. del Junco Jr. For giving me my life back.

Sincerely Yours,

Age: 43 years old
Resides: New York

I am writing to tell about my surgery by Dr. Tirso del Junco Jr. in May 1997. For 25 years I had deeply suffered with female bleeding problems beginning when I was in high school. The next years only saw mild improvements with birth control pills and I always took prescription iron to keep the anemia under control.

As I have since learned, I quite miraculously had a son in my 20′s and then a daughter in my 30′s, but the bleeding became even worse after that. I had D and C’s and those didn’t give any answers. I saw a series of doctors but they didn’t want to do anything because I could still have children. At the time, I began having allergic reactions to the birth control pills, but I continued living with my bleeding problems in frustration. Finally, in 1991, I just couldn’t live like this anymore. Tests and hormone pills made me ill and didn’t help. Nothing wrong showed up on ultrasound and biopsy; it seemed my only solution was a hysterectomy.

But that was something I’d fought to avoid. During this time I left traditional medicine out of desperation and tried alternative health. I learned about nutrition and allergies, but I still didn’t have any quality of life. I’d already missed so much of my husband’s and children’s lives due to being severely anemic and tied to a bathroom most of the month. I could never have a job. Eventually, due to my allergies, I was not able to eat much. As the bleeding worsened, my hemoglobin level dropped below 6.

Then a doctor I visited confirmed numerous and severe problems: adenomyosis, endometriosis, fibroids, cysts and a greatly enlarged uterus. While doing a laparascopy, she removed some cysts and repaired damage done during childbirth, and she recommended Female Reconstructive Surgery with Dr. del Junco Jr. Without delay,my husband and I decided this was the best solution and made immediate plans to travel all the way from our home in New York state to an unfamiliar hospital in California, where we knew no one.

May 6, 1997, was the big day in California. Dr. del Junco Jr. performed the surgery with his fantastic team and my husband viewed it via closed circuit TV. We finally discovered what was causing me to lose so much blood: What hadn’t showed up on three ultrasounds by different doctors in the previous six months was a mass of adenomyosis the size of a large grapefruit. The weight of it had stretched ligaments and caused my uterus to prolapse, and there were also fibroid tumors and cysts. Dr. del Junco Jr. reconstructed my ovary, removed the cysts and tumors, cut out the uterine mass, fixed the ligaments and repositioned my uterus.

My recovery was amazingly quick for all that had been done. Within eight weeks I was swimming three miles a week and I was like a new person. Today, my life is so much different. I can make it through a day with energy and joy, I lead a worship team for dance at our church, and I’ve re-opened my redecorating business. The bleeding that plagued me for 25 years has not returned. Except for the first few months, I have not needed any prescription drugs for pain or healing, nor any hormones with their uncertain side effects. I am normal!

I’ve shared my story so you’d realize what a special surgery this is. It is the only one that could have solved my problems. Today, women from all over the world go to California for the same reason I did–we’re all desperate for healing and health.

I’m forever grateful to Dr. del Junco Jr. for his compassion and skill in this pioneering work for women with reproductive problems.

I am a professional Make-up Artist in the entertainment and fashion industry. Working in Hollywood for over 25 years. I have worked on many stressful and demanding projects that required many long days of standing and dealing with stressful deadlines. What got me through those projects successfully is that I had an abundant level of energy and stamina; which helped me through each challenging shoot.

In hindsight, I realized how much I took for granted of my health. My healthy physical condition never gave me any reason to say no or turndown a difficult assignment; henceforth my monthly cycles were always a breeze. Normal bleeding no more than 3 to 4 days, no cramping and not even any signs of PMS.

It was just about 4 years a go as I was approaching my late thirties. I started to see some changes in my body as well as my menstrual cycles. For the first time I started feeling the effects of PMS and cramping before and during my monthly cycles. Some months were more intense than others, but as the years past, it progressively got worse.

The last year and half is when I can say the symptoms got so bad I didn’t know what to do. This is very traumatic for someone who has a very spontaneous, independent and active lifestyle.

During my period I felt as if someone was continuously stabbing me front and back for 3 to 4 days straight. Not to mention I was bedridden every month feeling debilitated. So planning trips i.e. vacations and even business related travels were very difficult.

Last May 98 I was put on fertility drugs (150mg Clomid), I had an HSG done in November 98. My results came back, I was told that I had a Bicorniary Uterus. The doctor told me that I wouldn’t have a problem getting pregnant. In December 98 I found out that I was pregnant and a few days later I had a misscarriage. I went to see another doctor, and was told to start trying again when I get my next Cycle. My husband and I tried again, and I found out I was pregnant in February 99. Then after being pregnant for 12 weeks, I misscarried again.

I got a referral from one of my doctors to see an Infertility Specialist. I recently seen him and he said he believes the reason that I keep misscarrying, is because of the shape of my uterus. He did all number of tests on me and they all came up normal. Tomorrow he wants to do an Ultrasound and more lab work, to see if he can see any other reason I keep misscarrying.

I was reading some stuff online that there are surgeries that can help me. Maybe fix my uterus so that I can get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy.
Is that so?

You are more than welcome to write me back. I always like more information on what can be done to help my chances of getting pregnant, and carrying a healthy baby to term.

Thank you for your time,
Ginger

Dear Ginger-I would not recommend operating on your uterus electively, unless an abnormality is diagnosed. Many women have successful pregnancy with a bicorn uterus. I recently reconstructed a bicorn uterus but this surgery was necessary to remove extensive fibroid tumors. Be patient and work with your gynecologist.
